Trevor Ablett is one of the few remaining craftsman knife makers in Sheffield - termed a "Little Mester" locally. Although he has passed his normal retirement age, Trevor has declared his intention of continuing to produce his hand-made pocket knife range which we make available to you via this web site.

These 100% Sheffield-made pocket knives come in a variety of styles and have handles made of Rosewood, Redwood, Sambar Stag, Bex or imported Buffalo Horn.
The knife blades are carbon steel and fold away safely for true pocket knife portability. A range of knife blade shapes can be ordered: Lambfoot, Farmer's, Pruner and Clip Point.

The pocket knife handles are single- or double-bolstered in brass depending on your choice. The pocket knives measure approx 3.5 inches in length for ease of carriage, storage and use (blade measurement includes the portion of the knife blade that incorporates the hinge inside the bolstered section; the cutting surface length will be shorter and, we understand, is within the legal permit to be carried by responsible persons under the age of 18).
Each pocket knife comes with a certificate of authenticity from Trevor Ablett. Each knife will be sent with either a 'Little Mesters' gift box or with a velvet pouch which you may use to carry the knife in your pocket to protect the handle from scratches from keys and coins.

Pocket knives are perfect to own. Ideal and thoughtful gifts for him or for her. Suitable for country life, gardening, hobbies, crafts and a thousand and one uses. A pocket knife is a great product that is hand made and a lasting souvenir of Sheffield, the traditional home of knife making.

Trevor had a feature and photo in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper magazine in early 2011 relative to him being nominated for an award.

DELAYS
All this publicity has led to a flood of enquiries and orders for Trevor's handywork which is good for the recognition of his skills but which has led to a delay in the supply of knives. The delay from the Guardian and other coverage has caused a knock-on effect resulting in a permanent backlog situation which has endured for fully 2 years.

As of early 2012, we now have a small backlog of knife orders. We even have a litle stock - see below for more details.

Trevor is doing his best to keep up with orders but demand is still high. He is one craftsman, working alone, and can only do what one man can do. Your patience is appreciated.
If you don't mind waiting a few weeks, please place your order and we will despatch as soon as we can. We 'guess-timate' at 3-4 weeks for new orders at the moment if we are out of stock of your preferred knife.

If you have a strict deadline date, please ask before ordering or explore the alternative Sheffield pocket knife maker below.

Please note that payment is made at the time of placing of the order. Our system does not have the capacity to defer the collection of payment so you could be paying for the order some time before the goods are received. If this is unacceptable, please do not order yet. However, customers who do pay now will naturally be given priority over those who merely register an interest.
Persons who order, pay, and then cancel before dispatch will be charged a fee of up to 10% of the value of the order to cover our un-recoverable payment-processing fees and our administration time.

Clippoint Barlow Pocket Knife Rosewood Handle

We are now able to offer you another Sheffield Pocket Maker's knives, from Arthur Wright & Sons, which are mostly in stock and ready for immediate despatch. There are some subtle differences to Trevor Ablett's knives but the blades are the same carbon steel, the bolsters are single and made from nickel.
The knives will be supplied in velvet gift/carrying pouches.

ABOUT THE KNIVES

CARBON STEEL
Carbon steel is not stainless steel but it can be kept bright and shiny with care. You should avoid leaving your knife to stand in a wet condition. Certain corrosive liquids can cause staining e.g. if you use a knife to cut an apple, the acid in the apple juice will cause tarnishing. Even fingerprints can transfer moisture to the blade which might stain it. Always clean your knife after use, and store in a dry location. Carbon steel has an advantage over normal stainless steel in that they can be produced with very sharp blades.

MATERIALS USED
Please note that all materials used to make these knives are genuine, not artificial. Some sites we have seen offer goods with plastic or synthetic handles. Only genuine materials can be found here. (NB - we can sometimes supply Bex handles which is a synthetic substance fashioned to the shape of stag. If Bex is offered then this will be clearly stated with the accompanying description.)

TREVOR ABLETT POCKET KNIFE RANGE
Because there is an element of hand-manufacture in the making of these knives, quoted blade lengths should be regarded as approximate and may vary slightly. Measurements include the whole of the blade length. The cutting portion of the edge will be shorter and within legal limits for the carrying of a pocket knife.

The knife I ordered for my husband arrived today and it was well worth the wait. It is beautiful, truly the work of a fine craftsman.

Thank you for my knife. I am delighted with it. One thing, I rounded the right angled part of the blate which displaces the spring upon pulling the knife open. I found this made the knife easier to open using a pinching between finger and thumb rather than using the nail notch. Perhaps you might want to pass that on. Again many thanks.

I can't believe how well it is finished considering the time it must take. I really wish I had a genuine need to use it and rely on it, as I am sure it would never let me down.
I am going to sharpen it and use it wherever I can (and buy another to keep boxed for my collection).
If you see him, tell him some fella was really happy and proud to own one of his knives.

Thank you for your assistance. The knives arrived last Friday. they are the best examples of knifemaking I have ever seen. This is the first time I have knowingly purchased hand made knives.
I am saving one of the two for a gift. It will go to the lead construction boss on the crew who is doing some remodelling on our home. I started out by giving surpluss new knives to one of his sons, then I decided I would give a knife to each of he crew. I am all done except for E.... When we near completeion in a month or so, I will present it to him in front of his sons and other workers. A fine tribute to a long time contractor to receive a beautiful hand made knife.
When you next speak with Mr. Ablett, tell him for me we are all in great admiration of his work in San Antonio, Texas. Expect another order soon.
